Patch 0.1.25 Notes

Patch 0.1.25 lets you choose your target with a click or Tab, opens a character pane on C where you wear what you find, and gathers your quests into one quest log on J.

New Features

Choosing a Target

You now choose what your attacks and abilities land on, with a click or with Tab.

  • Click a creature to make it your target, and click empty ground to clear it.
    • The target frame now shows the creature, person or player you have chosen.
    • When your target dies, the frame keeps it and reads Dead.
    • When no window is open, Escape now clears your target before it opens the game menu.
  • Press Tab to target the nearest living creature you can see within 40 metres, and press it again to move to the next one.
    • Hold Shift as you press Tab to go back the other way.
  • Your attacks and abilities now go to the target you have chosen.
    • With nothing chosen, they go to the nearest creature you can see in front of you, and it becomes your target.
    • If they cannot reach your target, the reason appears at the top of the screen, such as Out of range.
    • The number on an action bar key turns red while your target is out of that ability's range.

Developers' notes: Until this patch the game chose what each blow landed on, and the target frame only showed what you were facing. Now you choose, and the game still checks range, facing and sight before a blow lands.

  • Right-clicking a living creature now makes it your target and attacks it once.
  • People and other players can now be chosen as a target too, by clicking them.
    • A helpful ability goes to the player you have chosen if they are on your side, and never to a player of the other side.

The Character Pane

Press C to see what you wear, put on what you carry and read your item level.

  • Press C to open your character pane at the left of the screen.
    • It has eighteen labelled slots, from Head to Off hand, with two for rings and two for trinkets.
    • Your item level is the levels of what you wear in nine slots, added up and divided by nine.
    • The nine are Head, Shoulders, Chest, Hands, Waist, Legs, Feet, Main hand and Off hand, and an empty one counts as nothing.
  • Bows are now held in the main hand.
  • Reed bows and ash bows now deal more damage.
    • A reed bow now deals 8 damage instead of 7, and an ash bow 25 instead of 23.

Developers' notes: A weapon's damage follows what the place it is held in is worth, and the main hand is worth a little more than the place bows had before.

  • Right-click a weapon or a piece of armour in your bag to wear it, and right-click it in the pane to take it off.
    • Weapons and armour bind to you the first time you wear them, and the game asks you to confirm first.
    • You can wear only what your level and your Calling allow, and the game says why when you cannot.
    • Your stats on the pane change as soon as you put something on or take it off.
  • Your stats now show on the pane in two groups.
    • Holding the pointer over health, damage or a resource your abilities spend shows what it is for.
  • Item tooltips now show the item level, which Callings can use the item, and whether it is bound to you.

Conversations and the Quest Log

What a person has for you now opens in one conversation window, and every quest you hold is in one quest log.

  • Talking to a person now opens a conversation window that lists everything they have for you.
    • Each quest they give or take is a numbered row with its mark, and choosing one opens it.
    • A merchant's Show me your wares row opens their goods beside the window.
    • Vessa of the Long Road's question now appears in the window, with each answer as a row.
    • Goodbye or Escape closes the window, and so does walking away.
  • Press J or L to open your quest log, in the same window as the world map.
    • It lists your active and completed quests, each with its level.
    • Choosing a quest shows its next step, its objectives with your progress, and its rewards.
    • Track and Untrack choose which quests the tracker under the minimap follows.
  • The quest tracker under the minimap can now be clicked.
    • Click a quest to open it on the world map, or Shift-click it to stop following it.
    • The quest you have chosen opens out in the tracker, with each step ticked when it is done.

Ranks for Crafted Gear

A weapon or a piece of armour you craft now comes out in one of four ranks.

  • Each weapon or piece of armour you craft is now Standard, Fine, Superior or Masterwork.
    • A Fine, Superior or Masterwork piece has better stats and sells for more at a merchant.
    • The further your skill in a craft is past what the recipe needs, the better your chance of a higher rank.
    • The crafting window names the rank of what you made, and so does the merchant.
    • In your bag, a better piece carries its rank's numeral, from II to IV.

Developers' notes: When crafting stopped failing in September, we said the chance in a craft would lie in how good the result is. Ranks are that chance.

World and Quests

  • Halla Tideward now has a second quest, Reed for Bread, for those who have finished What the Tide Left and reached level 3.
    • She asks you to bake three loaves of traveller's bread at the firepit in Reedhaven and bring them to her.
    • Every character can bake the bread, and each loaf takes two reed fibre.
  • The reed beds by the boardwalk now give two or three reed fibre at a time, and grow back after two minutes instead of five.

Developers' notes: Reed fibre now goes into bread as well as Halla's first quest, and three players gathering together used to spend most of their time waiting for the beds.

  • Reedhaven's ground, its drowned gate, its boardwalk, its huts and its roofs now have real surfaces.
    • Mud lies under the water and along the tideline, and grass grows on the higher ground.
    • The drowned gate is mossy stone, the boardwalk, the huts and the tower are dark planks, and the roofs are thatch.

Creatures and Combat

  • Defeating a creature now gives you experience.
    • The higher the creature's level, the more experience it gives.
    • Every player who hurt the creature gets the full amount.

Developers' notes: Until now only quests gave experience, so a new character had nothing left to grow on once Reedhaven's first quest was done.

  • Fen hares now live in the marsh around Reedhaven, and run from you when you come near.
    • They can drop reed fibre, marsh hide or plans for Reedwoven armour, as marsh deer can.
  • Marsh deer now have less health and run a little slower.

Developers' notes: A marsh deer took too long to bring down at the levels where you first hunt one.

  • The marsh around Reedhaven now holds more creatures at once, so the fen hares do not take the place of the deer and the wolves.

Known Issues

  • Armour is shown on the character pane, but it does not lessen the damage you take yet.
  • The character pane shows a picture of your people and your Calling where your own character will later stand.
  • The choices on the Appearance and Body pages are saved with your character, but they do not change how your character looks yet.

Developers' notes: The new bodies these choices will shape are still being made. When a people's body is replaced, its characters are offered the free change of look again.

  • Every creature still wears the same simple stand-in body, so fen hares and mire wolves look like marsh deer for now.
  • The conversation window marks its goods, question and goodbye rows with plain symbols until their icons are drawn.
