Patch 0.1.24 Notes

Patch 0.1.24 lets you loot what you defeat, makes every hit something you can see and hear, and opens a map of the world with M.

New Features

Loot and the Bag

What you defeat can now be looted, and what you carry is shown as pictures.

  • Press E at a creature you have defeated, or right-click its body, to open a loot window under your pointer.
    • Click an item to take it, or press E or Take All to take everything.
    • The window closes when you walk away from the body or take the last item.
    • Hold Shift as you right-click a body to take everything without opening the window.
    • A body stays for two minutes, and goes ten seconds after it has been emptied.
    • Marsh deer can drop reed fibre, marsh hide or plans for Reedwoven armour, and mire wolves can drop marsh hide, bog iron or weave thread.
  • Your bag is now a grid of item pictures, seven to a row.
    • Uncommon and better items have a border in the colour of their rarity.
    • An item without a picture shows its initials.

Combat You Can See and Hear

Every hit now shows on the creature you strike, and every hit makes a sound.

  • A creature you hit now flashes and staggers.
  • The damage you deal, and the damage you take, now rise on the screen as numbers.
  • Each hit now makes a sound, with its own sound for weapons, abilities, blows you take and killing blows.
  • A creature you defeat now falls onto its side.

The World Map

A map of the region you are in now opens with M.

  • Press M, click the Map button or click the minimap to open the world map.
    • People with a quest for you are marked on the map as they are marked over their heads.

Quest Marks and the Quest Window

People now show whether they have a quest for you, and a quest window says what each quest asks and what it pays.

  • A person with a quest for you now has a gold exclamation mark over their name, and a gold question mark when you can hand it in.
    • A grey question mark means you have taken the quest and not finished it yet.
    • A silver exclamation mark means a quest you can take once you reach a higher level.
    • The same marks now show on the minimap.
  • Talking to a person with a quest now opens a quest window that lists its objectives and its rewards.
    • While you work on a quest, the window shows how far you have come on each objective.
    • When everything is done, its Complete Quest button hands the quest in.

The Action Bar

The action bar is wider, and your cooldowns, casts, resources and experience now show around it.

  • The action bar now has twelve buttons, on the keys 1 to 9, 0, minus and equals.
    • Each button shows its ability's icon, and its key in the top-right corner.
    • An icon turns blue while you cannot pay for its ability.
    • A cooldown now sweeps around its button, and the button flashes when it is ready again.
    • After you use an ability, the shared cooldown shows only on buttons that hold an ability.
    • You can turn on cooldown numbers on the Interface page of the settings.
  • A cast bar above the action bar now shows the ability you are casting and the seconds left.
    • It reads Interrupted or Failed in red when a cast does not finish.
  • A bar under your health bar now shows the resource your abilities spend, in that resource's colour.
  • An experience bar under the action bar, as wide as it, now shows how far you are from your next level.
    • Hover over it to read your experience in numbers.

World and Quests

  • Vessa of the Long Road now asks what you would do about the deer: thin the herd, or turn it off the reed.
    • You answer once, and from then on she greets you with what you chose.
  • People now say goodbye when you end a conversation with them.
    • For now, Halla Tideward and Vessa of the Long Road are the ones with a farewell.
  • Three reed beds now grow beside the boardwalk in Reedhaven, and pressing E at one gathers reed fibre.
    • Each bed gives one to three reed fibre, and nothing more for five minutes after it has been gathered.
    • Halla Tideward's quest What the Tide Left asks for five of them.

Creatures and Combat

  • Mire wolves now live in the marsh around Reedhaven, and they notice you when you come near, chase you and bite.
    • Marsh deer graze there too, where only two deer stood before.
    • A mire wolf gives up and goes home if you lead it too far from where it lives.
  • When a creature defeats you, you lie where you fell for ten seconds and then wake, fully restored, where you first arrived.

Developers' notes: A fall costs you nothing but the wait for now. A lasting penalty needs a way to lift it, and that is not in the game yet.

Crafting

  • A recipe can now be made only while you stand near the station it calls for: a forge, a herb bench or a firepit.
    • These stations stand inside huts in Reedhaven, and every hut there can now be entered.
    • Each recipe names the station it needs, such as Requires: Forge, and marks it while you are not near one.
    • Pressing Craft away from the station says what it requires, such as Requires Forge.

Developers' notes: A station is a place in the world, inside a hut you can walk into, and crafting now asks you to be there.

  • The crafting window is redesigned, with a tab for each kind of recipe and a picture beside each recipe.
    • Each material shows how many you have and how many you need, in green when you have enough and red when you do not.
    • The window now shows what an attempt costs before you start it.
    • A slider sets how many to make, up to what your bag and your copper allow, and the window makes them one after another.
    • Q and E change the tab, A and D change the number, F crafts and Escape closes the window.

Character Creation

  • The character creator is redesigned, with your character standing full-size on the left in a marsh scene.
    • It has new Appearance and Body pages, with a tab for each group of features.
    • The Appearance page can show a close view of your character's face.
    • The language choice is gone, because the game is in English only.
  • A character that has not chosen its look yet is marked Choose your look on the character list, and is offered one free change of look.
    • Pressing Play on that character opens the Appearance pages first, and the change is confirmed there.

User Interface

  • A quest tracker under the minimap now shows up to four of your quests and the next step of each.
  • The name of a region now appears at the top of the screen as you enter it, with its level range beneath.
  • A target frame now shows the name, level and health of the creature you are fighting or facing.
    • The frame only shows a creature, and never chooses what your attacks hit.
  • The first time you enter the world after a patch, a What's New window now shows the patch's highlights.
    • It opens once for each game account, and you can keep playing while it is open.
    • Its Read the Full Patch Notes button opens the patch's notes on our website.
    • You can open it again with the What's New button in the game menu, or from the patch's story in the login screen's news.
    • The login screen's news now shows a patch's notes first on the day the patch comes out.
  • When the game refuses something you try, the reason now appears in red at the top of the screen.
    • Quest progress appears there in yellow as it happens, such as how much reed fibre you have gathered.
    • Taking a quest and finishing one are announced there in yellow too.
    • Pressing an empty action bar button, or an ability that is still cooling down, shows no message.
  • Right-click a person to talk to them, a defeated creature to loot it, or a reed bed to gather from it.
    • A right-click on a creature that is still alive does nothing yet.
  • Logging out, quitting or going back to the character list from the game menu now counts down 30 seconds first.
    • You cannot start the countdown while you are in combat.
    • Moving, jumping, attacking, casting or being hurt stops the countdown.
    • When you quit, Exit Now closes the game at once, and your character stays in the world until the countdown ends.
    • If the game closes before a countdown has finished, your character stays in the world for up to 30 seconds.

Developers' notes: Until now, leaving the game took your character out of the world at once, even in the middle of a fight. A countdown that combat stops means leaving is no longer a way out of a fight.

Launcher and Installation

  • The game must be updated to this patch before it can enter the world, and the launcher does that when you start it.
  • From the next patch on, the launcher installs updates quietly inside its own window and names the patch, such as Downloading Patch 0.1.25.
    • A second launcher started during an update no longer updates at the same time.
    • When the update has finished, it says Updated to Patch 0.1.25 once, with the patch's highlights beneath.

Developers' notes: The launcher that this patch installs is the one that fetches the next patch, so the change shows from then on.

  • The launcher now shows a Patch notes link, which opens the notes for your patch on our website.
  • The launcher now tells us whether each update worked, and when the game has crashed.
    • A crash report holds only the kind of crash, a fingerprint of where it happened and the game's version.
    • Reports carry a random code for your installation and nothing that names you.
  • On a PC shared by several Windows accounts, only an administrator can now change the game's program files.
    • If an update cannot make this change, it stops before installing anything and puts back the permissions it found.
    • Before it starts the game, the launcher now moves aside any file in the game's data folders that is not part of Zizeeria.
    • If it cannot move such a file, it names the file, says that an administrator must delete it, and does not start the game.
    • The game now connects only to our own servers, whatever another account has written into its settings.
    • The game no longer opens a command console, and it ignores commands bound to keys in its settings.

Developers' notes: Before this patch, another account on the same PC could replace the game's files, change where the game sent your password, or make it run commands.

Bug Fixes

  • The character list and the Play screen now show each Calling by its English name, such as Warden.
  • The four people of Reedhaven now stand at rest instead of holding their arms out.
  • Your level on your portrait now updates as soon as you turn in a quest.
  • The game no longer crashes when you quit from the game menu while in the world.
  • Vessa of the Long Road's quest Too Many Deer can now be finished, because walking the northern grazing line now counts.

Known Issues

  • The choices on the Appearance and Body pages are saved with your character, but they do not change how your character looks yet.

Developers' notes: The new bodies these choices will shape are still being made. When a people's body is replaced, its characters are offered the free change of look again.
